“If the world remains silent in the face of these blatant acts of war, the Turkish state will continue to act with impunity”, said the protestors in the Australian city of Sydney, urging the Australian government to break its “shameful” silence towards Turkey.
Kurds and their supporters gathered in the Australian city of Sydney on Saturday to protest against recent Turkish attacks in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and to condemn international silence in the face of the aggression of the Turkish forces against the Kurds.
“If the world remains silent in the face of these blatant acts of war, the Turkish state will continue to act with impunity”, said the protestors, urging the Australian government to break its “shameful” silence towards Turkey.
The protest came in the wake of Turkey’s targeted attacks on Kurdish fighters within the borders of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Two attacks, believed to be Turkish, occurred in Iraqi Kurdistan last week, on 18 September.
Three members of an anti-terror unit affiliated with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) were killed, and three others wounded, in a drone strike on an agricultural airport in Sulaymaniyah (Silêmanî), reported to have been conducted by Turkey.
At around the same time, one person was killed in an armed attack on the Erbil (Hewlêr) office of the Brussel-based Kurdish umbrella organisation Kurdistan National Congress (KNK). The attackers have still not been identified or arrested despite the presence of numerous active security cameras in the area.
