The MP for the People’s Democratic Party (HDP) and co-spokesperson for Foreign Affairs, Hişyar Özsoy, said that the United States and Russia were gradually coming to terms with seeking a peaceful and political solution in Syria.

He indicated that the Turkish administration could find itself in a worse situation than the present one if it insisted on prolonging the Syrian civil war and keeping its troops in occupied areas, Mezopotamya News Agency (MA) reported.

He also added that a new Turkish incursion into northeast Syria seemed unlikely in these circumstances.

“In the context of Syrian policies, there are signs of a rapprochement between Russia and the United States,” he said in an exclusive interview with MA. “In other words, a political will to end the Syrian civil war gradually emerges.

“Turkey may, in the short term, be confronted by the US and Russia because of its policy to prolong and intensify this war. (…) It looks like these great powers are moving step-by-step towards a political solution in Syria. And this has limited Turkey’s ability to make manoeuvres to a great extent.”

Drawing attention to the fact that Syria has considerably restored its relations with Arab countries such as Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, which had serious problems with the Assad regime and were now rebuilding ties with Damascus, Özsoy said that this left Turkey even more isolated.

“Unfortunately, Erdoğan is trying to stay longer in Syria instead of finding an exit route while it is still possible,” he continued. “There has recently been a signal of a new military operation, but frankly, it doesn’t look very likely at the present juncture. (…) Erdoğan is steadily losing ground in Syria both in diplomatic and military terms.”

He indicated that Turkey could play a constructive role in Syria as a new equation for a new political regime was sought. “But if it insists on playing a destructive role,” he added, “things will be worse for Turkey because the US and Russia are coming to terms to end the Syrian civil war.”
