The liberation of Afrin
“The Jerusalem Post Newspaper reporter Ofra Bengio wrote that Biden was the most pro-Kurdish American politician ever. If the earth has an ear, it should not be odd that the Jerusalem Post also has an ear through secret service channels,” writes Selim Ferat for Yeni Özgür Politika.
The arrogant pose of US former President Trump is similar to that of Commander Mazlum Ebdi. The Trump era reduced the war between the Kurds and the Turks to a fight between children, and now it is over.
For this time, Kurdistan will pay attention to what Biden is going to do. In this sense, the sound coming from Jerusalem is important. It is also important for Rojava. We were at the beginning of the operation launched by the Turkish military for the invasion of Afrin. We all said Afrin will not fail, because the man who had previously said that Kobanê would fall was proved wrong.
However, negotiations among Russia, Iran, Syria and the US (as a secret observer) were held on a small scale in the Yalta Conference. It was revealed that Turkey’s intervention in the Rojava Council project was allowed by Russia, Iran and Syria and was reflected in the mainstream press.
However, the US and Russia, who opposed each other on many issues in the region, had agreed on the Turkish invasion of Efrîn. And the people of Rojava, especially Efrîn people, were faced with a Turkish assault.
It is generally accepted that the occupation of Afrin is based on a secret agreement between Russia and the US. When Erdoğan said “continue the military operations” for the occupation, in January 2018, he stressed the approval of the Trump administration with the following remark: “We believe in our common interests with America in the region, we believe we will act together”.
Three years have passed. At the beginning of this year, PYD co-Presidency Council Member Aldar Xelil said, “I hope 2021 will be a year of liberation for Afrin, Serêkaniyê and Girê Spî and the unity of the population will be ensured”. After his announcement, it was one of the main points of interest in the escalating military tension between the DSG and the Syrian regime.
A similar call from Commander Mazlum Ebdî to Xelil’s proposition: “What happened in Hewlêr, Silêmaniye, Afrin, Amed or Qandil cannot be seen as distinct from each other”. In the letter Mazlum Ebdî sent to the Minister of Southern Kurdistan Mesrur Barzani, Mazlum Ebdi said, “I hope to work together for the interests of our people in the coming days”.
All in all, the liberation of Afrin may have a shocking effect on the Erdoğan government, similar to Kobanê. It can be a deterrent for Turkey if Kurdish forces create national and international initiatives and forces for the occupation of Afrin. The liberation of Afrin will further enhance the Rojava Project.
The warnings and propositions of the philosopher Noam Chomsky on Rojava are important regarding the recent debates and the future administration of Biden: “The primary problem in Rojava is to survive. Following Turkey’s aggression, allowed by the US, the brutal Assad regime and other hostile powers in the region, Rojava may not have survived. It was almost a miracle that [Rojava] survived until now. It will not be an easy task, of course. International solidarity is possible. The example of Rojava is very important on this issue. It [Rojava] achieved enormous success and aroused considerable sympathy in international circles. But it is not enough because few people know about it”.
Neither a Rojava without Afrin, nor a Hewler without Rojava, will survive.
