Ecological destruction in conflict zones: burning of forests and building new gendarmerie stations

Due to the war policies of the government in the east and south east of Turkey, forest fires continue to spread in the region.

Forest fires in east and south-eastern Turkey can never be truly understood without considering the politics in the region since these fires are mostly as a result of the conflict that is taking place. On the one hand, the beautiful forests burn and on the other, construction of fortified gendarmerie stations (kalekol) continues in the region.

The latest example of this can be witnessed in the Cudi Mountain range. A fire broke out as a result of fire started from a Turkish military base in Deriyê Gabriel region and the fire, which spread to the forest area, continues to rage. Alongside this, construction of a new gendarmerie station has begun in the Deriyê Mazî region of Mount Cudi.

After the military attack launched in the countryside of Pirejman village of Piran district of Diyarbakir (Amed), a fire also broke out on 1 June in the forest area at the foot of Gorse Mountain. The fire has not been extinguished for nine days now and has spread to Bahçekapı and Çevrecik villages of Arıca district of Elazığ with the strong winds.

According to information obtained from local sources, the fire almost spread to the settlement area. It was reported that no one has intervened to stop the fires, which are moving towards the inner parts of Kurşunlu District.
