Disney translators to tread lightly on Turkey’s flashpoints
The Walt Disney Company has advised caution to translators working for the streaming service it recently launched in Turkey, over the country's sensitive issues, including Kurdish rights, LGBTI+ people, the Armenian genocide and the Cyprus issue.
In an e-mail to translators working for the streaming service it recently launched in Turkey, the Disney Company advised discretion with regard to Turkey’s flashpoints, including the Kurds, LGBTI+ people, the Armenian genocide and the Cyprus issue, the news website Duvar reported.
According to the memo, translators should “caution Disney Turkey officials about content that depicts critical points for Islam, the Armenian Genocide, the Kurdish issue and the Cyprus problem”.
The entertainment giant also asked translators to inform the company of any shows or films that paint Turkish President Erdoğan as a dictator, and any content that tells the stories of LGBTI+ people.
Recent changes in media laws require all video services, including digital platforms, to obtain broadcasting licences from the media watchdog RTÜK (Radio and Television Supreme Council), a move that has widely been interpreted as an attempt to censor Internet media.
The streaming giant Netflix and the Turkish platform MUBI are ampng those that have accepted the conditions required for the licence.
