US President Joe Biden on Wednesday praised his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for his efforts in agreeing to Finland and Sweden’s accession to NATO during summit in Madrid.
“I want to particularly thank you for what you did putting together the situation with regard to Finland and Sweden,” Biden said to Erdoğan during a meeting on the side lines of a NATO summit in Madrid. “You’re doing a great job.”
Biden also talked about the importance of maintaining stability in the Aegean and Syria amid the other topics, according to the White House statement.
Finland, Sweden, and Turkey signed a deal under which Ankara lifted its block on Finnish and Swedish membership, while the candidates pledged not to support the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and People’s Defence Unit (YPG), or the network of US-based cleric Fetullah Gülen, which Turkey blames for a failed 2016 coup attempt.
This agreement was signed a day before the Biden government threw its support behind the potential sale of US F-16 fighter jets to Turkey.
On the side lines of the NATO summit in Madrid, Biden also thanked Erdoğan for Turkey’s efforts to help get grain out of Ukraine.
