Basque Parliamentarian Oihana Etxebarrieta said that following official recognition by the Catalan Parliament of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), the Basque Parliament is also working in this direction, and that the AANES must be recognised as soon as possible in order for ISIS to be tried in an international court.

“The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria has social legitimacy, but it also needs institutional legitimacy” said Oihana Etxebarrieta to ANHA news.

She spoke about the latest attack by ISIS against Sina’a Prison in Haseke.

“This attack took place because there is little support from international forces. In order for this threat to end, international powers need to fulfill their responsibility for this common problem.”

We support AANES

Oihana Etxebarrieta made the following remarks regarding the AANES:

“We will always support the government of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, and will continue to walk beside them. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the AANES fought against ISIS for all humanity. We should never forget that,” she said, adding : “An international tribunal should be established as soon as possible to prosecute these gangs [ISIS]. This court is very important to be able to lay out the common responsibility.”

Status must be recognised

Pointing out that the AANES should be fully recognised institutionally at an international level, Oihana Etxebarrieta added:

“Recognition of the status of the AANES is a demand expressed by different organisations and local movements. We too are in favour of promoting and supporting this. I am working with my political group EH Bildu for acceptance by the Basque Parliament of status for the AANES.”
