Kobanê University will produce its first graduates on 28 October
The 640 students who entered the University of Kobanê in 2017 are preparing to graduate. Graduates will be offered job opportunities in AANES institutions.
Despite its limited means, 640 students were able to enrol at the University of Kobanê in 2017, and all of these 640 students are now preparing to graduate ANHA reports.
Kurdish is the language of education within the university, which has departments like Physics, Chemistry, Kurdish Literature, Arabic Literature, Educational Sciences, Geography, Classroom Teaching, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Anaesthesia, Nursing, and Laboratory Studies, an Academy of Economics and Administrative Sciences and a Health Academy.
The University of Kobane has also hosted various western and other international scholars and academics as guest lecturers, including the Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Zizek and the French sociologist Eric Vasin.
The 640 students who have completed their education at the university are expected to graduate on 28 October.
“After the war in Kobanê, the city was rebuilt. There’s been good progress in every area. The first graduates of Kobanê University, which opened in 2017, will take their degrees this year. The university was opened in difficult conditions. It is the first university in the region with Kurdish as the language of education,” says Co-Chair of Kobanê University Shêrîn Muslim.
Referring to the difficulties they faced, Şêrîn Muslim also said, “When the university was first opened, there were only ten academics at the university and 40 students. We’ve increased those numbers today. We now have 100 teachers.”
Dîlan Hecî, a student who studied laboratory sciences, said: “It is very good that the university teaches in the mother language. I chose this place on purpose. There were also significant shortcomings here, though. An extraordinary effort is being made to overcome them. We’re getting ready to graduate today. After graduating, I want to serve the public in an institution attached to the Autonomous Administration [of North and East Syria].”
Meanwhile, Cemal Walî, an academic in the department of chemistry, noted that with the opening of the university, young people have started not to leave the region or go abroad for their education.
“This makes people in the region very happy,” he stated.
