Turkish police report: 7-year-old Kurdish child killed by police vehicle ‘at fault’ in his own death
A unusually hurried through police investigation carried out after an armoured police vehicle killed Miraç Miroğlu, concluded that the child who died was 'at fault' by not respecting the crossing priority of other vehicles at a junction.
Seven-year-old Kurdish child, Miraç Miroğlu, killed by a Turkish police armoured police vehicle on 3 September in Turkey’s southeastern city of Idil, has been deemed responsible in a police investigation, MA reported.
Miraç, who was driving his bicycle when a speeding armoured vehicle hit him, hurling him metres away and shattering his bicycle, was stated in the report to have committed a major traffic offence listed in the Turkish Road Traffic Law, by violating the crossing priority at a junction.
The related article of the law says that drivers approaching a junction are required to slow down, remain cautious, and respect the crossing priority of other vehicles.
The investigation report said that the accident happened as “the bicycle driver Miraç Miroğlu did not comply with the ‘Stop’ sign due to negligence, and continued driving, colliding with an official vehicle.”
The driver of the armoured police vehicle, on the other hand, has also been deemed at fault for not slowing down as he approached a junction.
However, while the aforementioned Turkish law indicates that violation of a crossing priority is a major fault, failing to slow down at junctions is considered a minor one thereby the report manages to lay the larger part of the blame on the 7 year old child for his own death.
