Turkish military buildup on border and troop dispatch to Iraqi Kurdistan
According to recent news reports, Turkish troops have been dispatched to two military bases in Iraqi Kurdistan, while a build up of troop and armoured vehicles has been observed on the border.
The troops and armoured vehicles that were transported to several villages in Turkey’s Kurdish-majority province of Hakkari (Colemerg) within the last few days, have been deployed all along the Turkish-Iraqi border, Mezopotamya News Agency (MA) reported on Wednesday.
According to the report, the recent Turkish military build-up is part of preparations for a series of new operations in Zap and Metina areas in Iraqi Kurdistan. The operations are likely to be carried out by Turkish forces in cooperation with peshmerga forces of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), the dominant political actor in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
The Turkish military activities have intensified in late evening hours on Tuesday, as helicopters carrying troops were dispatched from posts in Zawîte (Ormanlı), Aşût (Çığlı), Gêman (Köprülü) in the district of Çukurca (Çelê), from a post in Elemûnê (Andaç) in the district of Uludere (Qilaban), and from the Suvara Kotra area located between the provinces of Hakkari and Şırnak (Sirnex), crossing the border to Iraqi Kurdistan, MA reported.
The report also said that the troops in helicopters were deployed in military bases near the villages of Gundê Bêdûhê and Orê on the other side of the border.
