The Xanesor People’s Assembly building in Sinjar (Shengal), northern Iraq, was targeted by Turkish fighter jets in an air raid at around 7:30 pm local time on Saturday, Roj News reported.

No information has yet been made available on casualties, but the building has been completely destroyed in the airstirke.

Groups of people are reported to have gathered around the wrecked building following the attack.

Feleknas Uca, MP and co-spokesperson for the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Turkey posted a message on Twitter after the attack, saying:

“What is this hostility against the Yazidis? What have the Yazidi people done to you, what kind of a threat do they pose to you that you’re targeting and bombing them at every opportunity? Enough with these attacks!

Second airstrike this week

Merwan Bedel Xwededa, co-chair of Sinjar’s Autonomous Administration, was killed earlier in a Turkish drone strike in the Xanesor region on Tuesday. His two children barely survived the attack.

Today’s attack has come three days after thousands attended a funeral procession for Merwan Bedel Xwededa, a legendary figure in the resistance of the Yazidi people against Islamic State (ISIS) attacks.

Turkey started targeting self-defence officials of the Yazidis after the defeat of ISIS in the region.

Ten people were killed in Turkish air attacks on 16 and 17 August this year including peaople in a medical facility, and a senior YBS (Sinjar Resistance Units) commander, Seid Hesen.

Prior to this incident, at least 33 individuals were killed as a result of Turkish airstrikes between 2017 and 2021, according to a report by the International Centre for the Study of Violent Extremism.

Written statements protesting against the Turkish airstrikes were released earlier by Iraqi officials, but to date Turkey has met with no other international response to its attacks against the Yazidis.
