Turkey: Imprisoned prominent Kurdish politician in urgent need of medical treatment
Lawyers for former MP Aysel Tuğluk, who has been in prison for almost five years, say she needs special medical treatment as her condition is rapidly deteriorating under prison conditions. They are demanding an urgent report from the Council of Forensic Medicine.
Lawyers for the imprisoned Kurdish politician Aysel Tuğluk made a public statement demanding that the Turkish Council of Forensic Medicine urgently report on Tuğluk’s medical condition, which has deteriorated rapidly in prison.
The lawyers, Reyhan Yalçındağ and Serdar Çelebi, indicated in their statement that Tuğluk needed to undergo treatment for her condition, reported Mesopotamian News Agency.
The lawyers also stated that Tuğluk wished not to publicly disclose details of her illness until a final medical report was released.
“We will inform the public further at the completion of the legal process, complying with the request of Tuğluk and her family that details regarding her illness are not shared with the public before that time,” they said.
Tuğluk, a former MP and co-founder of the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party (banned in 2009 to be succeeded by the Peace and Democracy Party), has been in prison for almost five years. She was sentenced in 2018 to a prison term of ten years on a charge of being a “leader of a terrorist organisation”.
Tuğluk had to face a public act of hatred and extreme hostility in September 2017 after her mother died, when a mob protested at her burial in the capital city Ankara, yelling that an Alevi should not be buried in a Sunni cemetery.
Officials gave in to the mob and the body was exhumed to be sent to Dersim, the home town of the Tuğluk family, for reburial.
