Sweden’s Kakabaveh says constitution possibly violated
Sweden's Kurdish-Swedish MP Amineh Kakabaveh wants the parliament to investigate whether the memorandum signed with the Turkish government is in violation of the country's constitution.
Swedish MP Amineh Kakabaveh objected to the memorandum Turkey, Sweden and Finland signed last week in Madrid and filed a criminal complaint to the Constitutional Commission against Foreign Minister Ann Linde.
“Sweden’s promise to export arms to Turkey means that it has decided on the issue before the National Inspectorate of Strategic Products (ISP), which is an independent agency that examines issues related to arms exports in the country,” the Swedish-Kurdish MP said.
In the memorandum signed on 28 June in Madrid, the three countries agreed to improved cooperation on matters of security and the two Nordic countries agreed to tighten their anti-terrorism laws as well as review Turkey’s extradition demands for individuals Ankara considers to be terrorists. In return of these measures, Turkey has agreed to stop blocking their bids to join NATO.
Kakabaveh also wants the Swedish parliament to examine the full scope of the promises regarding extradition cases.
“It is extremely serious if individual extradition cases were used as payment by the Swedish government to persuade Turkey to release Sweden’s and Finland’s NATO application. This is completely contrary to Chapter 11, Section 3 of the form of government on the independence of the judiciary “, Kakabaveh wrote in her report.
The deputy has called for a vote of no confidence against Linde, and says she may withdraw her support from the Social Democrat government over its approach to the Kurds.
