Russia, US must clarify position on Turkish attacks on Syria: SDF

The General Command of Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said in a statement on Friday that their forces “will not stand by regarding Turkish attacks” and that “losing officials, fighters, and civilians” will not pass without a response.

The statement also stated that the silence and ambiguous positions of both Russia and the US are behind intensive Turkish attacks on civilians on Syrian lands.

The statement mentioned four officials of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) who lost their lives as a result of the Turkish airstrike on a headquarters of the Tel Tamr Military Council on Thursday, and the name of another official who was killed in a Turkish drone strike.

Turkish forces have been targeting the region and its residents since they took control over Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) and Tel Abyad in 2019, intensively attacking areas of the Autonomous Administration in North and East Syria (AANES). The latest of these attacks on civilians was conducted days ago in Zargan (Abu Rasin) town, killing a woman and wounding 16 others, according to the statement.

“The martyrdom of these precious officials and fighters will not pass without response,” the statement added.

“The silence and ambiguous position of the ceasefire guarantor countries, including the US and Russia, is encouraging Turkey to escalate its shelling and attacks on our civilians and lands, so we are reminding them of their responsibilities and call on them to clarify their position,” SDF command added.

Additionally, the statement presented information about the martyrs and said that they were the first to fight against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Kobani, Manbij, Raqqa, and Deir ez-Zor as they countered the Turkish attacks in Afrin, Sere Kaniye, and Tel Abyad battles.
