Peace delegation heading to Iraqi Kurdistan blocked by German police
A peace delegation, including German MPs, heading to Iraqi Kurdistan to look into Turkey's operations in the region since 23 April, was blocked by the German police at the airport.
Twenty-seven members of the delegation went to Germany’s Düsseldorf Airport on the morning of 12 June but were detained by the police and had their passports confiscated. The delegates were questioned by the police at the airport.
Die Linke (Left Party) MP Cansu Özdemir spoke to Medya News from the airport where they were stopped.
She said that as they entered the airport, they were followed by a large group of police and they were photographed.
She said: “We were a peace delegation. I was going to hold diplomatic talks as an MP. We were going to meet with the people and visit Makhmur, which was bombed by Turkey last week. But the German police prevented us.”
Özdemir stated that a foreign travel ban was issued to a few of the detainees within minutes.
She emphasized that Germany had stopped them in order not to damage relations with Turkey.
