More than half the people of Turkey would prefer to live abroad, according to survey
The results of a recent survey indicate that both young people and voters of opposition parties are inclined to start a new life in a foreign country.
According to a recent survey in Turkey, 53% of all the voters said that they would like to live abroad.
While the results suggested that young people were much more inclined to leave their home country, they also hinted at a symmetry between the political views of voters and their desire to leave the country.
The survey, conducted in January by one of the most credible Turkish survey companies, Metropoll, showed that the desire to live abroad was much higher in the age group between 18-34, reaching almost two thirds of the total, and dropped almost linearly with age.
The voters of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and its partner Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) expressed the least interest for living abroad, respectively with 21.4% and 29.7% of their voters responding positively to the question, “Would you like to live or study abroad?”
The voters of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) constituted the voter group who were most inclined to leave, with a percentage of 82.3%, followed by those of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (76.1%), and the opposition Iyi Party (57.1%).
64.3% of the voters under the age of 34 expressed desire to live or study abroad, while the rate dropped to 48.4 for voters in the age group 35-54, and to 43.4 for those aged 55 and older.
