According to the Turkish opposition, 27 women have been killed, while hundreds of women have been subjected to violence since Turkey withdrew from the Istanbul Convention.

Turkey formally withdrew from the Convention on March 20th, last by decision of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The decision infuriated women's rights' organizations and criticized the European Union, Washington and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Women in Turkey continue to protest against Erdogan's withdrawal from the European Convention, under the slogan "The Istanbul Convention is ours, and we will not abandon it."

The document known as the Istanbul Convention or the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, adopted in 2011, forces governments to adopt legislation prohibiting domestic violence and similar abuses, including rape or female genital mutilation.
