The culture and struggle of Kurdish people on the big screen: Mostra de Cinema Kurd de Barcelona
Mostra de Cinema Kurd de Barcelona has for the sixth time brought stories of the Kurdish people to Catalonia.
Sixth edition of the Mostra de Cinema Kurd de Barcelona has ended on Tuesday in Barcelona. The festival which included both fiction and documentary films, brought the stories of Kurdish people to Barcelona again this year from 10-12 December.
The sixth edition of the Mostra Cinema Kurd of Barcelona started on Friday with a tribute to Halil Uysal, also known as Halil Dağ, who was a film-maker and fighter in the ranks of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, the PKK.
Eyna Bejnê (The Mirror) directed by Halil Uysal; Zimanê Çîya (Language of the Mountains) directed by Lisa Çalan, Hêviyên Kulîlkan (The Hope of the Flowers) directed by Sheren Zerevan, Evîn Di Rûyê Qirkirinê De (Love In The Face Of Genocide) directed by Şêro Hindê and Dema Dirîrêşkan (Blackbery Season) directed by Hașîm Aydemîr.
Nudem directed by Metin Ewr and Off Road directed by OSAD technical team have also been seen by the audience on the last day of the festival as these two films were the result of a cooperation project Càmeres i Drets, which aims to contribute to projects of cultural, economic and legal rights of young Kurdish refugees in Diyarbakır (Amed) in Turkey.
The Mostra de Cinema Kurd de Barcelona aims to facilitate access to the narratives generated by Kurdish directors about the people who live in Kurdistan and the stories of their people.
With the intention of becoming a showcase for the culture, traditions and struggle of the Kurdish people, Azadî, a platform in solidarity with the Kurdish people, and IVARDIA Produccions organize this annual exhibition of cinema of Kurdish origin or theme.
Many of the films in the festival are a snapshot of the movement of the Kurdish people; the struggle for women’s liberation and social ecology developed in the region, three pillars of a political paradigm that, based on Murray Bookchin’s studies on Libertarian Municipalism that the leader of the PKK Abdulah Öcalan, has incorperated into the policy of Democratic Confederalism.
The organisers of the festival state in their official website that they believe that the “people’s resistance and legitimate self-defence are a means to achieve peace and justice in the Middle East”.
