Whilst the resistance of Boğaziçi University students and academics against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s appointment of a member of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), Melih Bulu as rector to their university continues in Istanbul, support and solidarity protests continue to take place in the Turkish capital.

University students came together in the centre of Ankara in order to hold a solidarity march for the Boğaziçi students, but the police blockaded a number of main roads and streets, announcing that the march will not be permitted.

Police then attacked the group of students and reportedly detained a large number of students whilst the students were beaten and battered by the police.

When the demonstration continued their march, chanting “The universities are ours!” and “We don’t want state appointed rectors”, a second police attack followed.

At least 60 students have been detained by the Ankara police.

A student reportedly lost his consciousness during the police attack.
