“Shall we cheer up the squares with election songs?”- Jailed Kurdish politician Selahattin Demirtaş has asked musicians to contribute to the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) electoral campaign.
Jailed Kurdish politician Selahattin Demirtaş on Friday called on musicians and bands to contribute to the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) election campaign.
In his tweet, former co-chair of pro-Kurdish party Selahattin Demirtaş also called on all amateur musicians to participate in the competition.
“Shall we cheer up the squares with election songs?” Demirtaş asked, requesting musicians produce songs that indicate the significance of the upcoming presidential election in Turkey.
Voters will decide on the three best songs, winners will each be awarded an instrument, and every participant will receive a signed copy of Demirtaş’ book.
Demirtaş wrote a song himself which he recorded on his telephone while in prison, and this was played at a HDP rally in Istanbul to great acclaim, accompanied by the choir of the Dicle Firat Cultural Centre.
“It is now your turn,” the politician said, and called on musicians to send their new or adapted song to https://demirtasinfo.com/tr/sarki-etkinligi by 23 January.
Demirtaş has been held in Edirne Type F Prison since 2016. Several members of his party are jailed in Turkish prisons and the party faces a closure case.
