The United Nations on Saturday expressed its deep concerns about escalating hostilities in northern Syria, after dozens of civilians died in recent attacks in the region.

“These terrible tragedies once again show that civilians, many of them women and children, continue to suffer the effects of ongoing hostilities in parts of Syria,” read a UN statement.

“We urge all parties to take all feasible measures to minimise harm to civilians and abide by their obligations to protect civilians,” it said.

The statement from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs cited two latest attacks this week without naming the responsible parties.

Four children died and eleven were injured on Thursday when a Turkish drone attack targeted a UN-sponsored educational centre in Kurdish-controlled Hasakah in northeast Syria.

The attack was also condemned by the US-led coalition which, according to a statement made by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), has a base just two kilometres away from the targeted area.

The next day a rocket attack targeting the Turkish-controlled al-Bab in northern Syria claimed the lives of 13 civilians, including five children, and left 38 people injured.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, artillery shells were fired from Syrian government forces in the northern countryside of Aleppo as a response to an earlier Turkish air strike.
