Turkish police set up a check point at entrance of HDP conference
HDP members reacted to a police check point set up at the entrance of the party's regional conference in Diyarbakır, holding the conference outside the building in protest.
The Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) held its Diyarbakır (Amed) Regional Conference out in the open to protest against the police setting up a check point at the entrance of the building where the conference was to take place.
Party members, including HDP spokesperson Ebru Günay, Women’s Assembly spokesperson Ayşe Acar Başaran, and HDP vice co-chair Tayip Temel, reacted to the intimidatory tactics and harassment by the police by first closing the road to traffic.
As the police insisted on keeping the check point, the conference was then held outside the building instead.
“Fascism showed its face yet again,” Başaran said. “They are trying to prevent HDP from taking part in politics, and they are waging a battle against it with all kinds of excuses and means.”
Addressing the crowd, HDP MP Dersim Dağ said:
“A few days earlier they attacked the funeral of Kurdish politician Aysel Doğan. Today, they’ve tried to prevent us from holding our own conference. The Kurdish people have given the message through their struggle that any place is a place of organisation. We can hold our conference just anywhere.”
