Climate activist Greta Thunberg and advocacy group Fridays for Future joined a protest led by Kurdish women in Stockholm against recent killings in Iran and Turkey, including the deaths of Kurdish women Jîna Mahsa Amîni and Nagihan Akarsel.

Protesters carried photos of Akarsel, a Kurdish feminist theorist who took a leading role in the establishment of the Jineology Academy and research centre in Sulaymaniyah, and chanted “Jin, Jîyan, Azadî”, one of the main slogans of the Kurdish movement that translates to “Woman, Life, Freedom”.

Thunberg said the group joined to show solidarity with the Kurdish struggle, and that the protests around the world were “very inspiring to see”.

The famous activist pointed to the connection between environmental destruction and killing of women.

“We can not care about the climate without caring about people. We can not stand up for the climate if we don’t stand up against those who kill and destroy,” she said. “The people fighting for this are so brave. We look up to them very, very much. There should not be a need for it, but I hope their bravery will spread to more people, also here in Sweden.”

Thousands have taken to the streets around the world to protest against the death of 22-year-old Jîna Mahsa Amini in Iranian morality police custody. Hundreds have been injured during protests, more than 80 people have been killed, and more have been arrested.

Akarsel was shot 11 times near her home in Sulaymaniyah on Tuesday and succumbed to her injuries later in the day. Suspects have been arrested by Asayish security forces, and while many suspect Turkey’s intelligence agency MİT to be behind the attack, no official information has been made public yet.
