HPG reports ongoing guerrilla actions against the Turkish army
The focus in the war in Southern Kurdistan continues to be on the Çemço area in the Zap region. According to the HPG, two occupiers were killed in guerrilla actions and the Turkish army carried out dozens of artillery attacks in guerrilla areas.
The focus in the war in Southern Kurdistan continues to be on the Çemço area in the Zap region in the guerrilla-held Medya Defense Zones in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq). Çemço is located in the town of Sheladize in the district of Amadiya, where the Turkish army operates a major military base. Chemical weapons attacks against guerrilla positions are regularly carried out from the military positions there. Since the beginning of December, bombardments with outlawed weapons have escalated in Çemço. The People's Defence Forces (HPG) and the Free Women's Troops (YJA Star) have since reacted by strategically reorienting their activities and repeatedly going on the offensive.
Most recently, the fighters of the two guerrilla armies struck the invaders in Çemço on New Year's Day. According to the HPG Press Office, mobile units targeted Turkish troops a total of six times with light and heavy weapons within a few hours, and at least two soldiers were killed. In return, the Turkish military fired banned bombs at the guerrillas' defensive positions. In addition, dozens of attacks with howitzers and heavy equipment were carried out against Çemço and the surrounding area of the neighbouring town of Sîda.
According to the HPG, the occupying forces also attacked civilian settlements in other regions of Southern Kurdistan. A total of three waves of attacks by fighter jets of the Turkish air force were recorded, both on New Year's Eve and on New Year's Day. The area around Gundê Dereşê in Gare and Serê Metîna in Metîna were hit by the strikes. Information on the extent of the damage is not available.
