AANES: ISIS attempt to free detainees at Haseke prison thwarted by SDF
The Syrian Democratic Forces released a statement after a break out attempt at a detention centre that the situation was under control and that SDF units have been deployed in the neighbourhood where the assailants went into hiding.
An attempt by the Islamic State (ISIS) to free ISIS prisoners at the Xiwêran Detention Centre in Haseke, northeast Syria, has been thwarted by units of Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Thursday, Hawar News Agency reported.
According to the report, a number of ISIS fighters attacked the detention centre located in the Xiwêran neighbourhood, housing around 5,000 detainees affiliated with ISIS, after they detonated a bomb near the prison.
As clashes ensued between the assailants and security forces, ISIS fighters retreated and fled after setting alight three oil trucks belonging to the Syrian Company for Storage and Distribution of Petroleum (Sadcop).
While some of the detainees in the prison have been reported to have made attempts to escape, the anti-terror squads of the SDF have launched an operation to get the situation under control, and air vehicles of the International Coalition forces began surveillance in the area.
In a more recent statement by the SDF, the major armed force of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), it’s been indicated that ‘the disarray caused by ISIS gangs at the Xiwêran Detention Centre has been brought under control by security forces with the support of SDF.’
“While ISIS gangs started a fire at the centre, those who launched an assault from the outside later ran off towards the Zihûr neighbourhood and went into hiding in some of the houses. Our forces have been deployed in the neighbourhood,” the statement said.
