Protests continue in Iran with no sign of abating
In the fifth month of anti-government uprisings in Iran, protesters on Sunday night took to the streets of Tehran and other cities across the country, shouting slogans against the Islamic Republic.
Iran’s crackdown on protesters, with hundreds of killings, mass detentions and four executions so far, has failed to slow down uprisings that still continue after five months.
Residents of the capital’s Ekbatan neighbourhood shared footage on social media that showed protesters chanting “Death to the dictator” and “Death to the republic of executions” as they took to the streets.
During the protests, residents also blocked a road in the Ponak neighbourhood and chanted “Death to Khamenei,” in reference to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
In their masses protesters were also out to voice anger at Iran’s clerical rulers in the Kurdistan Province of Dehgolan and the northern city of Karaj.
Meanwhile, as the British government sanctions more Iranian individuals and entities over the Islamic Republic’s “brutal repression”, the European Union’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said that Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and its subsidiaries cannot be included on the bloc’s terrorist list until an EU court has determined that the Iranian elite force is a terrorist entity, reported Iranwire.
“It is something that cannot be decided without a court… decision first. You cannot say I consider you a terrorist because I don’t like you,” Josep Borrell told reporters.
The European Parliament passed a non-binding resolution last week advising the inclusion of IRGC on the European Union’s terror list.
Four people have been executed in relation to the protests to date, while more than 100 have been sentenced to death. Nearly 500 protesters have lost their lives at the hands of Iranian security forces.
