Woman shot dead in Iran protests becomes new symbol of resistance
Iranian forces have killed another young woman, Hadis Najafi, who has now become a symbol of the protests over the death of Mahsa Amini in Iran.
When Iranian security forces shot dead Hadis Najafi, a 20-year-old woman who had joined the mass protests against the killing of Mahsa (Jîna) Amini, they created a new symbol of defiance against the government of the Islamic Republic, Iran Wire reported.
Najafi was reportedly shot six times by Iranian security forces on 21 September after joining a protest in Karaj, a city close to the capital Tehran.
On Sunday, journalist and women’s rights advocate Masih Alinejad’s tweet announcing Najafi’s death quickly spread as accounts shared the news around the world.
Reports say Najafi was shot in the chest, face and neck, and died of her injuries in Ghaem Hospital.
Hadis Najafi became a new hero of the anti-government protests raging in Iran after thousands of social media users shared images of her defying the Iranian authorities, including an image which shows her tying her hair into a ponytail before joining the protest.
“She was only 20 years old,” Najafi’s sister told Iran Wire. “Her heart was broken for Mahsa Amini. She said she would not stay silent. They killed her with six bullets.”
Najafi is one of at least 41 people killed since the protests began to spread across Iran 10 days ago. The Iranian authorities have tried to suppress protests with heavy-handed interventions, including direct fire from riot shotguns and baton charges.
The protesters took to the streets after Amini’s death on 16 September. The 22-year-old died after reportedly being beaten by morality police, who arrested her in Tehran for allegedly wearing her hijab incorrectly.
