Iran shells opposition groups in Iraqi Kurdistan
The Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps has shelled Iranian Kurdish opposition bases in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The bombing comes amidst widespread anti-government protests all over Iran.
Artillery attached to the Iran Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) bombarded the Sidakan area of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq on Saturday, state media MEHR news agency reported.
The IRGC stated that the “terrorists” “had trespassed into the Iranian border region in recent days, and attacked a number of border bases in northwestern Iran.
“These operations were carried out following a detailed intelligence operation aimed at identifying the terrorists’ location, so their headquarters were targeted with great precision,” the IRGC added.
No casualties were reported, either among civilians residing in the region or among the Iranian Kurdish opposition groups .
The shelling took place amidst widespread anti-government demonstrations across Iran over the death of the 22-year-old Kurd Jina (Mahsa) Amini, that are particularly widespread in the country’s Kurdish populated regions.
The attack followed unverified reports on Friday that the Kurdish-populated city of Oshnavieh (Shno) near the Iraqi border was taken over by Kurdish protesters who drove the police out of town.
The IRGC also said that officials in northern Iraq failed to take preventative measures against the armed group’s anti-Iranian activities, although they had been warned to do so numerous times.
Several armed Iranian Kurdish opposition parties, including the Komala party, have bases in the mountains in Iraqi Kurdistan, and Iran often targets the surrounding areas as a result.
