Iraqi Kurdish police arrest Kurdish activist over social media post
Police arrested activist Khurshid Gulli in Iraqi Kurdistan’s Duhok province on Sunday over a Facebook post criticising government officials for arresting another activist.
The police in Iraqi Kurdistan’s Duhok province arrested activist Khurshid Gulli on Sunday over charges brought forth by the region’s ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).
KDP Duhok Branch Chairman Ali Awni pressed charges against Gulli for defamation of a public official and misuse of telecommunications.
The charges were made over Gulli’s post on Facebook criticising the July arrest of another activist, Khakvin Muhammed. Muhammed had been arrested for a criticism he made that KDP’s Awni had insulted Islam, opposition Goran Movement MP Ali Hama Saleh told MedyaNews.
“Khurshid did not mention anyone’s name. He wrote, ‘If you are a true nationalist and a Kurd, call yourself a man. Instead of fighting Islam, go and fight the occupiers who invaded our lands’,” Saleh said.
According to the opposition MP, Gulli’s case was the second time Awni pressed charges against activists for defamation in the past month.
Gulli should have been released on bail according to the law in the Badinan region, but authorities have refused to release him. The court plans to keep the activist behind bars until his trial begins, activist Ayhan Saed told Medyanews.
