Turkey: Staged provocation in front of HDP headquarters
A group gathering in front of the offices of the HDP in Ankara, hurled insults and threats as the police watched.
In another staged provocation in front of the offices of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Turkish capital Ankara, a group carrying Turkish national flags arrived and gathered to hurl insults and threats against members of the party, while the large police force on the scene took no action.
The group carried a banner and a black wreath bearing the name of a foundation for the families of police officers killed or injured in the line of duty.
They also carried a banner that read, ‘Down with HDPKK’, that is, a combination of initials for the HDP, and the PKK, the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party,
One person in the group was overheard shouting, ‘Be careful, we might come all of a sudden one night,’ according to a report by Mezopotamya News Agency.
HDP party members reacted to the group by singing and applauding.
Earlier on 5 May, HDP deputies were again harassed and threatened as the police surrounded the party headquarters to protect another group holding a similar protest.
During the incident a high-ranking police chief was recorded threatening HDP MP Ayşe Acar Başaran, telling her “I will nail you to the wall.”
